Chapter 9

Brandon

My phone buzzes and I glance down at it.

Where are you?

Someone jostles my arm and I dang near drop my phone. The guy apologizes and I instinctively check for my wallet. Finding it safely still in my pocket, I notice a couple people glaring at me with their lips curled in disgust.

Maybe it would be better to get out of here before anyone decides to say something to me.

Finishing the last sip of my beer, I move right along, causally texting her back. I’m currently at the music festival. Where are you?

Earth.

I chuckle. I love her humor, even when it misses. She just says whatever pops into her mind and it’s cute and endearing.

Did you just dad joke me?

Laughing faces follow. Maybe. So are we going to meet up?

Well that escalated quickly. I thought you were just curious where I am. With a grin, I realize I’m really excited to see her again. I love this playful banter, our easy conversations, her animated joy at everything in life.

Har, har, har. Seriously, though.

I glance around. I’m under a huge tree and near the parking lot that’s full of food trucks and vehicles of all makes, models, colors and years. I’m near the parking lot. Where do you want to meet?

Me too! I think I see you. Look to your right.

I glance over and see her waving her arm like a crazy person. The people around her are staring at her like she’s lost her mind, but I’m thrilled that she doesn’t seem to care what other people think.

She cuts through the crowd and I move toward her. As soon as she breaks free of the people milling around her she throws herself into my arms and clings to me.

“You okay?” I ask, suddenly worried about her.

“Yeah,” she says softly in my ear, still gripping me like she’s not going to let go. With her sweet, clean scent in my nose, I just hold her, ready to let go the second she makes a move.

Her arms release me and I step back, studying her.

“Let’s go over there,” she says, pointing toward a nearly deserted patch of grass between where we are and the parking lot. Her hand slips in mine as we walk and she lifts her face to the sunshine.

“So how was the backstage experience?” I ask as she lets my hand go and plops down in the grass. I sit beside her, noticing the odd change in her expression. She seems almost… upset.

“Well, Zach was drunk. Probably high, too. He spent the whole time trying to get me to go out with him.”

Anger churned in my gut. I knew I had no reason to feel jealous or protective, but everything in her body language says she’d been uncomfortable.

“But other than that,” she says, her face lighting up with a smile, “It was great! I played a video game with the guys and we chatted. It was fun.”

“Well, I’m a bit tipsy myself. So if I miss any cues you’re giving, feel free to put me in my place quickly,” I say.
